CIRA seeks membership input to strengthen board
CIRA announces dates for upcoming Election and Annual General Meeting
Annual General Meeting to Kick Off Board of Directors Election
Ottawa, ON – The Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) is moving to reinforce its ability to attract and retain the highest calibre of members to its Board of Directors. In line with modern governance principles, CIRA’s membership of domain name registrants overwhelmingly approved the introduction of compensation for its Board of Directors in February 2006. Now, the not-for-profit organization that administers Canada’s dot-ca Top Level Domain names is conducting a survey of its membership regarding the proposed compensation for CIRA’s Board members.
CIRA is governed by a 14-person Board of Directors comprised of 11 member-elected Directors and 3 ex-officio Directors, including the Past Chair, a representative from Industry Canada, and CIRA’s President. In addition to their preparation and attendance at eight meetings per year, members of the CIRA Board of Directors participate in extensive committee work to develop the policies that govern Canadian Internet domains and involvement in the international bodies that regulate the Internet.
“The Internet is a key public resource for all Canadians. Our success in maintaining Canada’s dot-ca Top Level Domain and presenting a strong, Canadian voice in international Internet governance is directly linked to the commitment, skill, and experience of CIRA’s Board of Directors,” says Bernard Turcotte, CIRA President and Chief Executive Officer.
CIRA members registered as of December 31, 2006 will receive an e-mail invitation to participate in the members-only online consultation which will run from January 8 to February 5, 2007.
