Manage your .CA

Nobody owns a .CA domain name. They are registered for a period of time by individuals or organizations.

Domain names are registered on a first-come, first-served basis. You can register a .CA domain name for up to 10 years - provided it's not already registered by someone else.

With the introduction of French character domain names, all .CA domain names sharing a common form are variants of each other and form an administrative bundle. For example, çira.ca and cirà.ca are variants of the domain cira.ca, and form an administrative bundle.

Each French character variant of a registered .CA domain name is reserved to the existing Registrant, and  cannot be registered by anyone except the existing Registrant. For more information about how CIRA handles accented French domain names, click here.

Unless you specify otherwise with your Registrar, .CA domain names are automatically renewed for one year upon their expiry date provided that your Registrar has sufficient funds in their deposit account to pay for the auto-renewal, and provided you pay your Registrar for the auto-renewal.

Your Registrar is your main point of contact for managing your .CA domain name.

Protect your .CA

Protecting your .CA domain name is easy: ensure your contact information is always up-to-date with your CIRA-certified Registrar. It is also very important that your Registrant information and your Administrative Contact's contact information is correct and up-to-date.

Domain name registration renewal

Unless you request otherwise, your domain names will be automatically renewed by your Registrar for one year upon their expiry date provided that your Registrar has sufficient funds in their deposit account to pay for the auto-renewal, and provided you pay your Registrar for the auto-renewal. The domain names keep renewing each year unless you request otherwise.

If you do not want your domains to auto-renew, you must notify your Registrar. Your Registrar may give you advance notice before your domain name's expiry date. You may also advise your Registrar that you do not wish to renew the domain name after it has auto-renewed.

If you advise your Registrar that you do not wish your domain name to be renewed, your Registrar will delete it. Once deleted, there will be a 30 day period where you can change your mind and renew the domain name. During that time, the domain name will be inactive. This means that your associated website and email addresses will not work until you renew your domain name with your Registrar. If you do not renew your domain name during this 30-day period, it will then be released to the public.
